Low Level Photography

Helicopter in the air

The X-Cell Gas Pro Radio Controlled Helicopter

While photographing a single commercial or residential site within city boundaries would be difficult with conventional aircraft, the radio-controlled helicopter makes the ideal camera platform with a typical operating range of 4m - 150m above ground level. Operation within confined areas, around trees, power lines and buildings are all in day's work for the helicopter. Roadsides, driveways and lawns are frequently our launching and landing sites. Civil Aviation approval and liaison with Air Traffic Control as necessary allows us to operate this equipment legally within city boundaries.

The radio-controlled helicopter Skycam New Zealand uses for low-level aerial photography is an American X-Cell Gas Pro powered with a 22.5cc CDI ignition petrol engine. A "heading-hold" gyrostabilizer and autopilot help improve stability in less than ideal conditions. The machine carries a 35mm camera using sharp fixed-focal-length optics as well as a video camera sending pictures back from the air. This allows very selective photographs to be taken.
